Adam Rutherford was the father of Shannon, step-father of Boone, and husband of Sabrina Carlyle.

He was killed in a head on collision with a vehicle driven by the future Sarah Shephard. He died at St. Sebastian Hospital in 2001.

When Jack was confronted with the two victims in the emergency room, he chose to save Sarah, even though her injuries seemed to be much more severe. In doing so, he let Adam die. His fate was further sealed by the fact that the intern did not know how to intubate patients. ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")

• Although his time of death was said to be at 8:15 AM, the intern's watch showed a time of 11:14 AM.
