Charlie's ring
From Lostpedia
{{{Caption}}}
Charlie wore a ring with the initials "D.S." on his right hand's middle finger. The ring was a family heirloom of the Pace Family, the initials being those of his great-grandfather Dexter Stratton. It provided the inspiration for the name of the band Drive Shaft. Dexter was the paternal grandfather of Charlie and Liam's mother Megan Pace. Dexter left the ring to his son who left it to his daughter Megan who left it to Liam. ("The Greater Good").
The ring was first seen in "Pilot, Part 2", when Charlie was tapping it against the airplane seat; Charlie wore it through the duration of the show.
Charlie received the ring in Helsinki, during Drive Shaft's second tour of Finland, when his brother Liam gave it to him as a Christmas present the morning after a successful concert. Liam recounted the ring's story to Charlie: the ring had been passed down through his mother's family from his great-grandfather, always given to the first born. Liam presented it to his younger brother because he felt that his own rock 'n' roll lifestyle might be a danger to the ring's legacy. Liam explained that Charlie's odds of having a family and surviving the rock-star life were higher than his and thus the ring should go to him. ("Greatest Hits")
Before leaving for his fatal mission to the Looking Glass, Charlie left the ring in Aaron Littleton's crib, passing the ring on to the infant who in their short time together on the Island had become something of an adopted son to Charlie. ("Greatest Hits")
Aaron never received the ring before leaving the Island as one of the Oceanic Six; it was still in the crib on the beach when the Island was moved.
Trivia
- Charlie's D.S. ring is included as a prop in the Charlie action figure set.
- Despite his suggestion that Charlie is more likely to have a family, Liam was in fact the one who ended up settled with a wife and child, while Charlie was the one who persisted in dreams of rock superstardom and a lifestyle of drug addiction.
- In "The Moth" both Charlie and Liam are seen together wearing D.S. rings. This may be a production error.
- Dominic Monaghan, who plays Charlie, also played Merry in the Lord of the Rings-a film trilogy that also featured a special ring in a prominent role.
