Compasses are used by a number of characters in Lost, most often for navigation. They are necessary for getting to and from the Island on the correct bearing, however they do not appear to function correctly on the Island.

• Locke brings at least two compasses with him to Australia. He gives one to Sayid (who comes to believe that he gave him a broken one because it keeps deflecting from true magnetic North). ("Hearts and Minds") Michael was also shown using a compass during his journey to find the Others in "Three Minutes".

• In "Hearts and Minds" Sayid creates a makeshift compass.

• In "Enter 77" Sayid uses the compass to lead them on Locke's heading of 305.

• Michael is told by Ben to follow a bearing of 325 on the compass to get to safety.

• A brass compass was one of Richard Alpert's objects ("Cabin Fever")

• A compass forms part of the logo of The Maxwell Group.

North on the Island

Some maps of the Island shown in episodes place the beach camp of the survivors to be on the north shore while others say south. Magnetic north on the Island however seems to be opposite of geographic north. See for example Locke's northward course toward the Flame and the Barracks.

In Lost: Via Domus

Non-Canon alert! This article/section contains information that was shown or released via an official source such as ARG's, or extended media (video games, books), however it has no canonical merit to the overall Lost mythos.

In Lost: Via Domus, Elliott finds a compass in the caves with the inscription "Via Domus" next to a skeleton reminiscent of Adam and Eve. Elliott uses the compass to navigate around the Island.
