Gas masks have been crucial objects in the Island's history. They were used by the Hostiles during the Purge to protect themselves from the toxic gas that they used to kill members of the DHARMA Initiative. Ben wore one when he killed his father in the bus. ("The Man Behind the Curtain")

Ben gave Juliet a gas mask shortly before waking up in the jungle with Kate. ("One of Us") When the Others abandoned the Barracks, they were seen putting on gas masks. Jack, Kate and Sayid were then gassed. ("Left Behind")

When Naomi arrived on the Island she was wearing a high altitude oxygen mask. ("Catch-22")

Later, Jack Shephard discovered a mask in the box that the freighter team jettisoned from their helicopter in the electrical storm on their initial approach to the Island. When he asked Daniel Faraday what the mask was in the box for, Daniel nervously responded that he "wasn't in charge of packing". ("Confirmed Dead")

Kate discovered a gas mask in Dan's pack immediately prior to being knocked out by Charlotte. Dan and Charlotte then donned gas masks and hazmat suits in an attempt to stop the gas from being released from the Tempest. However, both Dan and Charlotte's masks were ripped off by Juliet. ("The Other Woman")
