Kidneys have played a large role in several of the characters lives.
Locke and Cooper
After being "found" by his long-lost mother, Locke meets his father, Anthony Cooper. Cooper then convinces him into a kidney transplant, which Locke accepts. After the transplant, Cooper disappears, leaving Locke with one less kidney and no father. ("Deus Ex Machina") This "theft" leads Locke into a lot of anger issues, and he attends support groups, where he found others' problems insignificant to his own. ("Orientation") Later, on the island, Locke is shot by Ben. ("The Man Behind the Curtain") Locke later states that the bullet went in on one side (his stomach area) and went out the other (his back). He says that if his kidney hadn't been removed, the gunshot would have killed him. ("Confirmed Dead") The bullet is on the left side of Locke's body, so, presumably, it was his left kidney that was removed. Michael Emerson has hinted that this is why Ben shot Locke there. (Season 4 Arrives!)Ben
During Ben's surgery, Jack makes a small incision in Ben's kidney sac. If the wound was not sutured in an hour, Ben would die. ("I Do") This gave Sawyer and Kate time to escape. Jack then sutured up Ben's kidney. ("Not in Portland")
