Identity
- Dr. Chang chooses his own aliases for the various film clips and he has a wry sense of humor. Before we take the poor guy's arm away, we should consider the possibility that he had a temporary injury.
- There is a natural association between the words "candle" (Dr. Candle), "wick" (Dr. Wickmund), "wax" (Edgar Halliwax), and "flame" (the The Flame). This could be simply creative writing on the part of the show's creators, or it may indicate that 1) the station was named after the doctor, 2) "Candle" or "Wickmund" could both be aliases given to the doctor based on his association with the station.
- Which is odd since his real name is Pierre Chang which seemingly has no association with candles at all. Perhaps it is just a personal hobby and he used this hobby as a basis for his identities?
- Each of the three names may indeed be different people in time. In the Orchid video, we see the 15 rabbit appear on the shelf making two of the same rabbit. If this happened to Dr. Marvin Candle, perhaps he has multiple existences of himself at one time and they require separate names to be able to distinguish between them.
- Benjamin Linus is fond of witty aliases (Henry Gale, Dean Moriarty) and either encouraged Marvin Candle to create alternative names, or came up with them himself.
- Based on physical resemblance, Pierre is related to Miles in some way.
- Just because they're both Asian doesn't mean they're related.
- Of course not, but it is an indicator.
- If this is the case & Chang and Miles may be related, could Miles be the one who filmed his message from the past?--
- Interest thought. If the baby is Miles (see below) and Miles is doing the filming, then Miles is in the room twice at the same time.
- Maybe this would have something to do with the situation like the Orchid video where the Rabbit labelled 15 appears twice, this could also be why "Lara" has to take the baby outside, avoiding contact between it and Miles.
- Dr. Chang uses aliases to prevent himself being used as a constant over different films/time-periods.
The Baby
- The baby heard in the new video is Jin Kwon. Mr. Kwon made a point of stating that he did not even know if Jin was really his son.
- The baby heard in the new video is Miles Straume.
Arm
- A prosthetic arm is moveable.
- The prosthetic arm was just a dramatic device to lend credence to the "incident" and further the urgency of pushing the button at the Swan.
- In light of the video revealed at Comic Con 08, it seems that his behavior towards his soon-to-be-lost arm (also given the genuine nature of his speech) discounts the theory that the prosthetic arm was just for dramatic effect.
- The Pearl Orientation Video was recorded *BEFORE* The Swan Orientation Film, meaning he lost the arm in some sort of incident. (The Pearl video was dated 1981, and the map on the Swan's blast door indicated something happened on October 28, 1985.) However, the copyright date of The Swan film is 1980.
- This suggests that the Pearl film was recorded AFTER the swan film!
- Chang went back and recorded over the original Swan film in order to trick the next occupants into not pushing the buttons
- The experiments at The Orchid caused him to lose his arm. Something was going on there that was very dangerous, as Dr. Halliwax seemed very distressed that the two rabbits would possibly come in contact with each other.
- Why would a prosthetic arm not be movable?
- Could have been shortly after he received it and was not used to it.
- Pierre Chang lost his arm in "The Incident," which has something to do with the electromagnetic anomaly in The Swan Station.
- Recall both The Swan Orientation Film from 1980 and the most recent Comic Con video in which Candle/Halliwax revealed himself to be Pierre Chang. A lot of people have mentioned that Chang looks at his arm when talking about The Purge in the Comic Con video. Keep in mind that if the generally accepted time line is indeed correct, then the Comic Con video was filmed in 1978, The Swan video was filmed in 1980, and The Purge occurred in 1993.
The other men
Misc.
- One reason DHARMA might have needed an Astrophysicist to help change the "Core Values" of the Valenzetti Equation, could be related to the Island's ability to manipulate space and time. (as seen in ("There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3"))
- Jugding from the voice in the video of July26 (comic-con 2008) his reliable source that gave him information from 30 years in the future is: Faraday.
- Any DHARMA member who saw two different orientation films would notice the change in his alias. So DHARMA personnel were not meant to see more than one of these films in their lifetime. It is known the Pearl was never meant to encounter the Swan due to the one observing the other and sending their records perpetually into an empty field.
- That is never suggested by the creators or by the show. And given that the stations are listed in order (The Pearl is 4 out of 6, I believe), one can assume the opposite of what you are saying, and that instead DHARMA members went from one station to the next in order.
- DHARMA personnel are very specialized, so it would be unlikely that an astrophysicist would, say, later be stationed at the Hydra which is primarily concerned with zoology, or the Pearl which is simple observation (and perhaps psychology). Just because stations had been assigned numbers does not necessarily mean that DHARMA workers would know the names and purposes behind other numbered stations. Someone who only had access to the Swan orientation film would simply know that "The Swan" is station 3 of 6 - nothing more.
- If people were to rotate along the stations, the logical thing would be for Chang to use his real name -- or one alias -- in all of the films. Otherwise people viewing the films would begin to wonder why they were not being told the truth. The original theory makes more sense than the rebuttal.

- He is associated with Naomi and is trying to find the island once more to destroy the Hostiles and the remains of the Swan.
- The glass eye may belong to him, as on the Orientation videos, some fans have theorised that he may have a lazy eye.
- Candle has gray hair and looks in his mid-50s while Wickmund has black hair and looks in his late 30s, so Wickmund is a different person because his video was the newest since it was recorded on VCR and if it is Candle he is supposed to be older not younger. However, maybe the island is granting him immortality.
- Candle will be the main villain of the remaining seasons.
- Another reason it could exist is because "Halliwax" himself really did exist and at some point, decided to focus personal attention to the Orchid (either as an instructor for trainees here, because something happened to the one assigned to operate here and he was forced to prevent/continue assignment, because etc.).
