Out of 324 people on board ("One of Us"), there were 72 initial survivors (71 humans and 1 dog) of Oceanic Flight 815 spread across 3 sections. 64 of these survivors have either spoken, or have been seen or referenced in the episodes of the show. After about 40 days on the island Aaron Littleton was born.

27 of the total 71 initial survivors of the crash are either known to have died or presumed to have died during the the main timeline of events on the Island. There are as many as 44 remaining survivors (49 if the presumed dead characters are included); however, 13 of them have been absorbed by the Others and are rarely seen. As of the Season 4 finale, Locke has also joined the Others.

There are too many unnamed background characters to list (e.g. Tourniquet Man, Gas Man, N.D. Survivor). In fact, due to turnover in the background cast, there are more unnamed background characters than there are unnamed survivors on the island. Because of this, it is impossible to list specific unnamed characters unless their status is known.

Over 50 extras have rotated to portray the background (non-speaking) survivors of Flight 815. Some survivors have been given nicknames by fans, some of which have also been associated with specific names from the dialog in the script of episodes. This is merely an artifact from vagaries of the irregular hiring of such non-salaried extras: The number of individuals in the pool of every extra who has ever appeared on the beach dating back to Season 1 exceeds the "official" number of survivors. Therefore it is likely that in future episodes, some extras will suddenly appear, while others temporarily or permanently disappear. Extras that have been incidentally given or associated with a name in script dialog appear in the main table, above. See the main article for a full list of extras, and any given or fan names.
