This article refers to a fan-theory surrounding the turbine explosion in "Pilot, Part 1". For information on the related stunt, see Visual effects, or for the character who was killed, see Gary Troup.

During the first few minutes of the "Pilot, Part 1", the plane turbine exploded. However, when the scene is enhanced and detailed, it is observed that an object swoops down, over the turbine, and lifts up and off the frame just before the explosion occurs.

When the same scene was shown from Nikki's point of view in "Exposé", the mysterious object was not present. The sequence showing the turbine before the explosion the mysterious object would have shown up in was missing from the episode altogether.

Notes

• The object was considered by some fans at first to be the Smoke Monster. However, in one of the Official Lost Podcasts, Damon Lindelof stated that the Monster never appeared physically in the Pilot episode. Later on, they go into detail about CG errors. ^{[source needed]}

  • Thread 1, Javier Grillo-Marxuach specifically states that the smoke monster didn't cause the explosion, Gary Troup getting sucked in did. Accordingly, the theory is considered to be officially DEBUNKED.
